FAQs

Domestic

How much does a domestic solar PV system cost?

At RVC Electrical Ltd, most home installations range from £7,000 – £12,000 depending on roof size, panel type, and system capacity. We provide a full site survey to give an accurate, transparent quotation.

How much can I save on my electricity bills?

Homeowners typically save £300–£600 per year, with additional income available through export payments.

Do I need planning permission?

Most domestic installations fall under Permitted Development. We will advise if your property requires planning approval (e.g., listed buildings or conservation areas).

How long does installation take?

A standard domestic system is usually completed in 1–2 days, with minimal disruption to your home.

Will solar panels work in the UK climate?

Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight. Output is lower in winter but still contributes meaningfully to annual savings.

Is my roof suitable for solar?

Most UK roofs are suitable, including tile, slate, and metal. RVC Electrical carries out a full structural and electrical assessment to ensure compliance with MCS standards.

Do I need a battery?

A battery isn’t essential but is highly recommended, as it increases self‑consumption and energy independence. Systems can be installed “battery‑ready” for future expansion.

How long do solar panels and inverters last?

Panels typically last 25–30 years. Inverters generally last 10–15 years, depending on the model.

What maintenance is required?

Solar PV systems require very little maintenance. An occasional clean and an annual visual check are usually sufficient. We recommend a full service and test is completed by a competent person every 5 years.

Can I get paid for exporting electricity?

Yes. Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), you can earn payments for surplus electricity exported back to the grid.

Are financing options available?

Yes. RVC Electrical Ltd offers flexible financing options to help spread the cost of your solar installation, making renewable energy more accessible for homeowners.

Commercial

What are the benefits of solar PV for commercial buildings?

Solar PV helps businesses reduce operating costs, stabilise long‑term energy expenditure, and support net‑zero and ESG commitments. RVC Electrical has delivered commercial systems for schools, councils, and industrial clients across West Yorkshire.

How much roof space is required?

Commercial systems typically require 8–10 m² per kWp. We design systems from 50 kWp up to multi‑roof, multi‑building installations.

Will installation disrupt our operations?

We plan works around your operational schedule, ensuring safe segregation and minimal downtime. Most businesses continue operating normally throughout installation.

What is the typical payback period?

Commercial systems usually achieve payback in 3–6 years, depending on energy usage and system size.

Can solar PV support our sustainability goals?

Absolutely. Solar PV directly reduces Scope 2 emissions and supports corporate sustainability reporting, carbon‑reduction plans, and net‑zero strategies.

Do we need planning permission?

Most roof‑mounted commercial systems fall under Permitted Development. Ground‑mount or large‑scale systems may require planning approval, which we can assist with.

What about grid connection and DNO approval?

All commercial systems require G99 approval. RVC Electrical manages the full DNO application process, including export limitation solutions where required.

Can solar integrate with our existing electrical infrastructure?

Yes. We assess your LV switchgear, maximum demand, spare capacity, and any need for distribution board/switchboard upgrades or dedicated PV distribution boards. We also provide a full electrical installation design to BS7671:2018 for all the electrical installation work required.

How long does installation take?

Smaller commercial systems may take 1–2 weeks, while larger or multi‑building projects can take a few months depending on complexity.

What warranties are provided?

Panels include 25‑year performance warranties, inverters 10–12 years, and RVC Electrical provides full workmanship warranties in line with MCS requirements.

Are financing options available for commercial clients?

Yes. Tailored financing solutions are available to help businesses invest in solar PV without large upfront capital expenditure.
